The heart of our nature-based, hands-on campus is a beautifully renovated 100-year-old red barn which serves as our school building.
Nestled in the scenic Loess Hills and conveniently located between Crescent and Council Bluffs, Iowa the school is situated on 160 acres of rolling oak-covered terrain.
Once a hub for crop production, the property now offers access to hills, native plants, and gardens, providing endless opportunities for exploration and hands-on learning in nature.
The Red Barn Schoolhouse got its start in 2017 when the Crescent Community School Alliance (CCSA) was founded to work with the Council Bluffs Community School District (CBCSD) and provide ongoing community support for Crescent, Iowa's local elementary school.
In 2023, CBCSD decided to close the school, negatively impacting the cohesiveness and connectivity of the Crescent and Honey Creek area.
The former Crescent Elementary School was one of the highest achieving schools in CBCSD and achieved the National Blue Ribbon Award for academic excellence in 2012.
Thus, the Red Barn Schoolhouse, a new, fully-accredited, tuition-free nature-based public charter school was created to build on the strong foundation of the Crescent Elementary School, and provide students with an education rooted in nature as a bridge to a broader world.
