Principal Position Overview:    


Title: Principal Administrator    

Reports To: Governing Board    

Salary:  $95,000 - $120,000 annual salary  

Benefits: Premium individual health, life, dental, visual and disability insurance will be paid 100% by RBS. IPERS retirement benefits offered.  


Starting Date: July 1, 2026 - Contract Commencement  
  

Opportunities for development of over-all key school planning - March 2026 - July 1, 2026 Per Diem.    
  

This is a full-time, exempt position    
  

We are welcoming a steward and co-creator to apply for a position as Principal of the Red Barn Schoolhouse. Here you’ll lead the way in creating a groundbreaking educational experience for children. Teaching and learning will blend nature, community, and artistic creativity with the Iowa Academic Standards. Innovative instruction will employ a year-round calendar and a four-day student week designed to support both deep learning, educator well-being, and parental involvement. A cadence of monthly opportunities are dedicated to teacher planning, reflection, and professional collaboration, ensuring that educators have the time and space to innovate, document learning, and refine their practice. We are searching for an educational leader to guide this emergent process and who has the ability to hold both vision and structure—balancing innovation with organizational leadership. Candidates will need a strong belief in academic excellence as a foundation for lifelong learning.    
  
   

Education & Experience Requirements:    
Certification - must hold or be eligible for Iowa Administrative Licensure    

Experience - Proven school leadership and a minimum of five years of teaching required.  Administrative experience preferred. Preference for candidates with experience in leading innovative initiatives.   
  

Preferred Leadership & Management Skills:    
Ability to hire, mentor, and support teachers, especially in co-teaching models. Self-directed, highly motivated to lead all aspects of the school.  Ability to manage school operations, including budgeting, scheduling, and compliance with grant reporting requirements and state/federal education policies. Support teachers in all aspects of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Create, conduct, and partner with others to provide quality professional development for teachers and community partners. Strong belief in the principal role as the shaper of the positive school culture.  Ability to work with all stakeholders to advance the school’s mission.    


Curriculum & Instructional Focuses:    
Knowledge and understanding of project, inquiry, and discovery based learning.  Ability to lead and facilitate the implementation of an integrated curriculum that aligns with academic state standards; prioritizing outdoor learning and arts integration. Deep understanding of child development and unique learner needs. Willingness to lead the integration of community partnerships in student learning (e.g., local artisans and naturalists).  Oversee partnerships for special education, talented and gifted programs, English learners and underserved students in collaboration with Green Hills AEA.
