 About The Red Barn Schoolhouse:

This is a new, nature-based, tuition-free, public K-5 elementary charter school located in the Loess Hills of southwestern Iowa, just 15 minutes from the vibrant Council Bluffs/Omaha metro area. The school is set on a property featuring prairies, gardens, green space, and old-growth forests. The location offers abundant opportunities for nature-based and experiential learning. We are opening our doors in August 2026.


Teacher Position Overview:

Title: Elementary School Teacher

Reports To: Principal

Salary:  $55,000 - $85,000 annually

Benefits: Individual health, life, dental, visual and disability insurance will be paid 100% by RBS.  IPERS retirement benefits offered.

This is a full time, exempt position


We are welcoming teachers to apply for a position as a K-5 (K-4 to start)  elementary school teacher at the Red Barn Schoolhouse. We are hiring three teachers, Kindergarten, an integrated grade 1/grade 2 teacher, and an integrated grade 3/grade 4 teacher.  Class sizes will be kept between 15 and 20.   Our new teachers will support the creation of a groundbreaking educational experience that blends nature, community, and artistic creativity. 


We employ an innovative year-round calendar with a four-day student week.  This calendar is designed to support deep learning for staff and students, educator well-being, and opportunities for true parent partnerships. 


Candidates will need a strong belief in academic excellence as a foundation for lifelong learning and believe that children thrive when they are:

  • Seen, heard, and deeply engaged in their own learning journeys.
  • Invited into meaningful exploration through nature, art, and inquiry.
  • Surrounded by caring adults who build trust and belonging.
  • Challenged and supported in achieving academic excellence through hands-on, inquiry-driven learning.

Preferred Education & Experience:

  • Minimum Requirement: Iowa-Certified Teaching License (https://educate.iowa.gov/educator-licensure/licenses-authorizations) 
  • Experience as an elementary teacher

  • Ability to access and utilize resources from a variety of sources
  • Creates and utilizes a variety of student assessment tools

Community & Family Engagement:

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with school stakeholders
  • Ability to build partners in the community
  • Innovative in approach to partner and collaborate with families
